Guest Presenter for the Evening – Lars Tharp, Antiques Roadshow Expert and Broadcaster
Lars Tharp, author, lecturer and broadcaster, is a specialist in European Ceramics and Oriental Works of Art. He believes passionately in the importance of History - recent and distant - and in the ability of objects to speak from places hidden by the passage of time.
Since 1985 he has appeared regularly on television; notably as Ceramics and Oriental Works of Art Specialist on the BBC Antiques Roadshow and as presenter of his own 12-part series Inside Antiques (BBC3). He works regularly on radio; last year, after his two-week trek through China, making China on a Plate (Radio 4), he returned via Shanghai to host their own Chamber of Commerce Summer Charity Ball - as Long John Silver.
Born in Copenhagen, Lars was educated in England. He read Archaeology at Caius College Cambridge, joined Sothebys to become a director and auctioneer of the company and in 1993 set up his own consultancy business Lars Tharp Ltd. A liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Weavers and a visiting professor at De Montfort University, Lars is a Trustee of The Hogarth Trust as well as of the Museum of Worcester Porcelain. Later this year in Worcester he will be appearing in the Three Choirs Festival with “’Twixt Pots and Pox”, his talk celebrating the 300th birthday of Dr John Wall, medic, artist and founder of the first Worcester Porcelain factory (1751).
